Whether you are learning violin on your own, or having violin lessons with a private violin teacher, there are five essential violin accessories you can prepare before you start. You can find many different kinds of these accessories in music shops. Consult with your teacher during violin class. Here is five essential accessories I think is necessary to prepare before you start:
#1 Essential Accessory: Music Stand
Find a steady music stand at home. You may need to put not only a music book on the music stand, but also pencils, markers, or tuners...etc. A lot of things may add too much weight on the music stand, and it may fall over easily. During the practice, if your music stand falls over easily, it would be very distracting.
#2 Essential Accessory: Shoulder Rest
Get a comfortable shoulder rest which fits your neck and shoulder. From well-known brands shoulder rest, such as Kun or Pirastro, to as simple as a sponge, there are plenty of choices in the violin accessories market. A shoulder rest can help you minimize the learning curve of holding the violin. A good start of playing violin is the combination of having a good violin teacher and using the right shoulder rest so you can have a correct violin holding posture.
#3 Essential Accessory: Violin Rosin
Violin rosin is a must when playing violin with the bow. Your violin bow is going to slide or get out of control if you don’t apply rosin on the violin bow. Same as shoulder rest, there are many kinds of violin rosin in the market. Do your research before you choose the rosin. Also, an expensive rosin does not mean it is good.
#4 Essential Accessory: Violin Cleaning Cloth
Clean the violin every time after you practice. The violin would be covered with dust or rosin after a long time without cleaning. The violin needs to be cleaned regularly, and I suggest every student clean their violin right after they practice violin. You do not need to apply any cleanser on the cleaning cloth. A simple cotton clean cloth will do a good job.
#5 Essential Accessory: Tuning Fork
A tuning fork gives you an accurate A before practice. I put a tuning fork in my violin case, and this means I don't need to use my phone tuner or a tuner for tuning my A string. The tuning fork can last forever.
Ask your violin tutor before you make your choices. Your violin teacher may advise you something that fits you the best.
